We have a lot to celebrate but we still have a long way to go.
On June 28, 1969, the police invaded the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan. Riots and protests ensued throughout the city.
Transgender activists Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera played a pivotal part in the riots, considered one of the most important events leading to the gay liberation movement. Ironically, more work for the transgender community is still needed.
The Stonewall Inn was declared a historic landmark by the city of New York in 2015 and later named a national monument by President Barack Obama in 2016.
